Course Description: This is a literature and writing based English class designed to increase students' knowledge of literary styles, genres, techniques, and terminology in order to analyze age appropriate literature and begin to utilize the literary devises in their own writing. Students writing will follow the Colorado and National Writing Project Model focusing on 6 Trait writing skills--ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Students will also reinforce previously introduced expository writing structure--development of a hook, topic sentence, reasons, details, facts, and conclusion.
FRESHMAN ENGLISH UNITS
Literary Analysis: focuses on analysis of plot, character, point of view, tone, figures of speech, symbol, and theme.
Shakespeare: Students will read William Shakespeare's Macbeth. They will be introduced to Shakespeare, his play, his theme, and his symbols.
Writers' Workshop: Students will utilize the Colorado and National Writing Project model of creative writing focusing on 6 trait-writing skills--ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions to create various genres of writing.
Expository Writing: Students will further develop their skills in the expository writing structure--development of a hook, topic sentence, reasons, details, facts, and conclusion.
